In May year 2000 we started the project Disseminated Margins
with support of Pro Helvetia (Arts Council of Switzerland;
Cultural Exchange East - West) and Open
Foundation Society Institute Macedonia
1.Description
The project is named Disseminated Margins and it
will take place in several cities in Macedonia (Skopje,
Bitola, Prilep, Gevgelija, Strumica, Ohrid, Kumanovo).
Happenings will occur in period from 2000-2002.
Besides the organizational team that includes people who are
working on the magazine "Margina", we have an
intention (actually that is one of the main points) to involve
other people from different profiles: philosophers,
sociologists of culture and media, critics from different
areas, artists, filmmakers and from the other cities that are
included in the project - people whose point of view on
current movements and happenings in culture and society
differs from the one that belongs to "oficial",
arbitration culture.
The main aim of the project is a certain diffusion of
cultural contents from "Marginas's" point of view.
Our target groups are people between 18 and 30 year old mainly
from the provinces of Macedonia. The project's base is regular
publishing of the magazine "Margina" (12 issues for
3 years), but with improved contents from the local scene.
The project will be realized throughout:
- collaboration with Houses of Culture in mentioned cities
and with associations and movements in local communities:
Multimedia (Skopje), City Concil of Skopje ( contact
person: Jovan Manasievski), The Economy University -
Prilep (contact person: Ljupco Pecijarevski, sociologist),
The Low university - Bitola, HOBS (harm-reduction
foundation, Skopje; contact person: Nora Stojanovic), ZERO
(alternative art group in which associate 10 artists:
Stankovski, Tosevski, Vangeli etc.), Mirko&Slavko
Partizan's Production - Skopje (studio for film and
production; contact persons: Darko Mitrevski i Aleksandar
Popovski), KOMA (graphics design, Skopje), Gender Studies
- Skopje (contact person: Katerina Kolozova), The
Philosophical Society - Skopje (contact person: Zarko
Trajanovski).
- informing and stimulating the cultural creations and
happenings in the local community;
- creating the alternative cultural networks (using the
internet); organization of discussions, promotions,
exhibitions, workshops on certain subjects connected with
the contents of the certain issue of Margina
(Globalization, Feminism, Cultural Politics, Oral
History...).
As result of those activities we will print separate themes
in Margina dedicated to the main points of those mutual
experiences. Essays and comments that will be "born"
from those activities will be supported with translations of
essays from other languages by contemporary theoreticians of
culture art and sociology on certain subject (by the way, in
Macedonia contact with the contemporary worldwide theoretica l
thought is on the very low level and we would like to stop
that kind of intellectual isolation).
One of the goals of this project is developing the montly
magazine for culture, art and theory.
2. Basis
The magazine "Margina" exists 7 years. Until now
we have published 50 numbers. Considering its own concept and
also considering its organizational, non-institutionalized
structure, "Margina" differs from current magazines
for culture and theory. "Margina" presents themes
that nobody at all is treating: the relationship between local
and central, the alternative instead the
"fossilized" art, affirmation of differences and the
point of view of minorities.
"Margina" is a magazine whit a unconventional
concept and aim, especially for Macedonia, which contain the
idea of decentralizing culture. It appears 4 times yearly,
whit total scope of about 800 pages (every issue has about 200
pages). About 2/3 belongs to translations and 1/3 to
Macedonian authors. We have a good colaboration wit simillar
magazines from the region (Arkzin, Zarez - Croatia, Rec -
Srbija etc.) an with the authors who are writing in those
magazines. We tend to invite some of them to our panel
discussion.
Subjects and authors are from different areas:
- Cultural studies
- Globalization
- Deconstruction
- Cultural Politics
- Mediums and politics
- Visions and ideas describing the new university
- Europe
- Contemporary Feminism
- Anarchism
- Situationist International
- Imaging the Balkans
- Fiction:
Eden von Horvat , Georges Perec,
Alessandro Baricco, William Gibson, Donald Barthelme, Thomas
Pynchon...
The Macedonian authors are mostly younger. The important
thing is that they usually have their first appearance in
"Margina". We are truing to develop the theoretical
scene in Macedonia concerning important social questions and
problems.
Very important part of "Margina's" contents are fine
arts, graphics contributions and comics which are mainly from
the contemporary world art scene, but also we have many
contributions from the contemporary Macedonian authors.
The work in our magazine is non-profitable. So, people who are
involved in its creation have to work for living in main
stream magazines. That takes lot of energy and now we would
really like to devote to Margina more seriously. In that way
we think that we might influence and change weakness in
Macedonia's contemporary cultural streams.
3. Objectives
Macedonia is ruled by terrifying cultural centralization
and arbitration. Most of the cultural institutions, structured
in previous socialistic society, have been failed and new are
not created in the mean time. Especially cities in the
provinces are in a very bed condition. They are literary cut
of the cultural production from Skopje, which is, by the way,
very poor. Our Magazine has the same problem: we don't have
good distribution, we don't represent our authors out of the
conventional content of the Magazine. So, in a situation in
which we are now we are aware that we can't realized our main
aim - the decentralization of the culture.
Cultural diffusion and certain demetropolissation - that is
what we would like to achieve. We are trying to overcome
the centralization, arbitration, and obsolete and unfair
relations of power in culture. We are trying to establish the
relations and connections between the protagonist of the art
scene, to strengthen the ideas that are "Margina"
would like to spread and to improve not just
"Margina's" distribution but the distribution of
other "alternative" contents.
In that way we are going to open the path for cultural
exchange between the artists, people from culture and
happenings in different cities in Macedonia and between the
artists and the local community (activity that is now dead)
and also we will have a better chance to inform people more
widely about the current contemporary theoretical thought
introducing author by translations and by inviting them to
include themselves in our panel discussions. That is how we
are going to research the link between culture - society -
art. We hope that in that way we will stimulate people to
get involved themselves in areas that might seamed distant to
them and to give them a chance to fell themselves as a
important segment of building the image of their community and
culture. A kind of demystification of the concept of
"high" art.
